Updates & Activation

Microsoft Windows KMS Activation

In order to activate volume licenses for Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 from the Select Program tubIT provides a Key Management Server (KMS). This server allows all PCs within TU network (WOTAN) to activate using the server.

Automatic activation: All PCs using Windows (Vista or newer) try to activate via volume activation 2.0. For that purpose specific DNS servers are employed. This requires your PC to have a DNS server from TU Berlin as standard DNS server (130.149.7.7). Furthermore the primary DNS suffix has to be set to tu-berlin.de.

Manual activation: If your PC does not connect automatically to the KMS server, you can activate your PC manually. Start a command prompt with administrator rights and enter the following commands:

cscript %systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -skms kms01.tubit.tu-berlin.de:1688

cscript %systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato

Your PC is now activated. Please note that Port 1688 has to be forwarded from your network in order to access kms02.tubit.tu-berlin.de.

Note: The suffix can be found in your control panel.

  1. Open command prompt (Win+R), enter sysdm.cpl and confirm
  2. "Change" > "More..." > "Primary DNS suffix of this computer"

Please note: for some computers which have been purchased via OEM distribution without OS the activation of Windows 7 upgrade licenses can lead so severe problems (PDF, 89,6 KB).

Microsoft Office KMS Activation

Lupe

For the activation of volume licenses for Microsoft Office 2010, Office 2013, Office 2016 or single products from the Office Suite tubIT provides a Key Management Server (KMS). This server allows all PCs within (wired) TU network to activate using the server.

Automatic activation: All PCs using Microsoft Office 2013 (or newer) try to activate via volume activation 2.0. For that purpose specific DNS servers are employed. This requires your PC to have a DNS server from TU Berlin as standard DNS server (130.149.7.7 or 193.174.75.142). Furthermore the primary DNS suffix has to be set to tu-berlin.de.

Manual activation: If your PC with Office 2013 (or newer) does not connect automatically to the KMS server, you can activate your PC manually. Start a command prompt with administrator rights and enter the following commands:

Navigate to the installation directory (e.g. c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15 resp. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 (for 64Bit systems)) and enter:

cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:kms02.tubit.tu-berlin.de
cscript ospp.vbs /act

Your PC is now activated. Please note that Port 1688 has to be forwarded from your network in order to access kms02.tubit.tu-berlin.de. The activation is only possible using the wired network of TU Berlin.

Windows Update Service

Lupe

Windows Server Update Services is a patch and update software from Microsoft. It consists of a server and a client component. WSUS donwloads updates from the internet (Microsoft Update) and offers them to the Windows clients for installation. The WSUS administrator can determine which computer should receive which update.

The client component integrated to Windows 2000 SP3, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 allows server and client computers to obtain updates from Microsoft Update or from a server running Update Services.

WSUS-Server at tubIT: The IT Service Center of TU Berlin tubIT provides Windows Update Service for all institutes, employees and students free of charge. Access from outside TU network is impossible.

  • Advantages of WSUS by tubIT:
  • Server and PCs without internet access are supplied with updates
  • Updates for Windows system can be installed automatically
  • Service is maintenance free after configuration

We are happy to assist you with your implementation.

The group Server is cleared for the following updates:

We have created the group extern for that purpose. All available Microsoft Updates are available for downloadh ere. In order to receive the updates the file wsus.reg (REG, 2,7 KB) has to be executed. These settings will come into effect:

    • Auto download and notify for install
